Hello MT 4

Well, it’s taken me 2 hours to actually set up the new site, including the time it took me to upload the new version via FTP. I probably could have done this much quicker had I searched for how to upload the tar file and extract it via SSL, but I was rather anxious to get things rolling.

The install was very straight-forward, and the wizard guided me through perfectly. I had a little trouble with the password logging in, but was able to recover quickly from that. The trick was to configure the database before doing anything else, have all the necessary folders already set up, and double-check the permissions for all files with a CGI extension. Apart from the initial login failure, this process was error-free. The login problem was possibly user error. :)

I love the new look for version 4. The black header, with a centered display and wider screen makes it much more user friendly. The dashboard is a great idea. After looking through the extras folder I can see a few plugins in there that I would definately love to try, especially the captcha one. But it’s nearing midnight and enough for one day. There’ll be time enough for testing all the new features on another day.

The number of different formatting options looks wonderful. I’ve chosen Markdown with Smarty Pants for starters, but the Rich Text looks interesting and I’ll need to try that out too. The Write Entry screen has many more formatting buttons than the previous MT version 3.5 and I can see it will take some getting used to. The extended entry is via a tab at the top, and with the wider view makes inputting text so much cleaner looking.

I love it!

It all looks great and I can’t wait to get my hands dirty with the new templates.

Six Apart are a cool bunch of dudes. Jesse Gardner wrote an excellent article describing 10 things that MT4 will do to make your blog rock. A great read.
