Asset Handler is a plugin that I stumbled across today and I've been wishing for something like this ever since I updated to MT4. Most of my blogs have been around a while, and so there's been a whole slew of images that have never previously made it onto the asset listing screen.
Once I installed Asset Handler, I was able to import everything from my images folder. The plugin also has a batch editing feature where you can easily edit the title, description and tags for the assets you select.
This plugin should be incorporated into the MT interface.
I made the mistake of going through the asset list, and deleting all those files that I hadn't included in posts, for example, the popup pages that are created when you embed thumbnails, some pdf files and small icons. These got deleted off the server and so I've spent a bit of time putting everything back up. Luck for me I have an automatic site backup set up and the most recent backup was 5 days ago. There might be a couple of missing images from this week's posts but these can be easily restored. You live and learn.
Another asset management tool that I stumbled across is the Pixenate Photo Editor plugin for Movable Type. When installed, it shows your assets as thumbnails, with an option to view a larger image and to edit the image. There's quite a selection of tools in the editor and it's easy to use. Normally you'd do any edits before you upload a photo, but there's been occasions when I've wanted to crop an image or resize it and this plugin lets you do that and much more.
